A New Way To Know Too Much?

downloadAt a very young age, we were taught: “If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.” Nothing in all the years since has modified that teaching. So when we heard that we could visit a new website to obtain a background investigation of anyone in the U.S. based upon the public records throughout the country, we wondered.

Public Records  A new site tells all  … provides a link for those interested.

Arrest records, birth and death, marriage, business, all those things that government collects about us, available at the tip of your browser? Surely too much to hope for when your daughter introduces her new boyfriend or when you are about to hire a new employee.Or to be feared if you are that boyfriend or employment applicant. We’ve pretty much given up on privacy since the NSA snooping and hacking came out, but at least the government was keeping quiet about whatever it discovered; this new website will tell all to anybody if what we’ve heard is correct.

We have our doubts. Will we find our Senator’s DUI arrests listed? Spousal abuse records on Hollywood big names? Hmnn … And the inevitable: What does the site say about us? Or about our tax preparer or doctor? Or our wife of fifteen years?

So we have decided that by and large, we are best off if we stay away from this new version of Pandora’s famous box. We know quite a bit already about too many folk for comfort. Particularly about ourselves. Nor do we like to think of what might happen if we made inquiries about some politically powerful type with a bit of paranoia. Or unintentionally, a drug lord. A little knowledge can indeed be a dangerous thing.

But you may be more curious and those in business certainly have a need to know about folk with whom they have important dealings. They will ensure the success of this new site, we are sure. We hope that they live long enough to enjoy their gleanings … We recall a lot of old movies featuring characters “who knew too much,” Such a dreadful fate might be exceeded only by someone whose wife knew too much. So we’ll pass but we hope the new site is useful to some of you. And we tell you in advance, if you look us up; it’s all lies!

  1. I was told you can’t believe everything you read in a newspaper. Your suspicion is well founded. Our governments have proved that there is one thing they are experts at and that is telling lies. What a wonderful misinformation platform against any citizen. The jack boots are crashing through your door because you are a gangster/terrorist/just released from prison for murder – it’s true, it says so on the site open to public view – everyone can read it. The govt NEVER does anything for the benefit of the citizen, only themselves.

I am torn re an appropriate motto to be emblazoned in 5 foot letters across the entrance to the Capitol: Dante’s “All hope abandon, ye who enter here” or your last sentence …
