EDITORIAL:         Are China and the U.S. Adding Taiwan to Ukraine?

It appears that the U.S. (NATO) is at war with Russia in Ukraine, using mostly Ukrainian combatants for battle fodder but committing billions of dollars in war material and support services. The recent clumsily symbolic visit of Taiwan by the Speaker of the U.S. House and its prompt Chinese overreaction seem calculated to add an invasion of Taiwan to that of Ukraine; one must wonder about what was said in the recent Biden/Chi phone call. China, Russia and the united States share impending, largely self-imposed economic and probably social destabilization from the culmination of opportunistic government policies. Foreign wars are a traditional distraction for such circumstances. However, as the Russians are discovering in Ukraine, taking a marginal economy to war is a gamble. Losing gamblers are known to resort to desperate behavior and all three of these are nuclear powers, one of which has already used its nuclear weapons. Twice..
