EDITORIAL:         The Mythic “Right” To A Living Wage

Our universe contains but does not provide our sustenance; we must wrest it for ourselves. Blended efforts are more effective; the blending process creates markets to integrate and balance those efforts towards efficiency. The presence of government disrupts that process, replacing economic values with political goals.

When government mandates a higher cost for low value work, the added increment is paid by the buyers of that work; their standard of living is thereby reduced to that extent. The welfare of many is slightly decreased to more considerably benefit a chosen few. But it is politically naïve to expect the chosen few to remain few in a democratic society; their inevitable multiplication raises the general decline to significance at some point.

When that point has been reached, the alternatives presented are a return to market values or an advance to government mandated pricing generally. This latter has been the historical preference of voters. And again historically, the result has always been a smaller, wealthy elite presiding over general poverty, a politically unstable situation. China, Russia and the United States represent slightly different points on the time continuum of the process. But technological progress seems to be bringing convergence … Technology has also made the poverty less onerous, at least for the moment and in some locations. But looming financial disruption in response to massive government economic mismanagement is upon us and the U.S. military is as reported in the news items above, recruiting “internment specialists.”.
