EDITORIAL:  Fake News and a Trumped-Up Economy

Current wisdom has it that the Prez wants to preserve the illusion that he presides over economic success at least until after November, 2020. We wish him luck with that. Hoover had it easy in 1929 compared to what’s in store. But out here in reality away from Washington D.C. and the propagandists who have replaced the old newsfolk, we need to look at what is real, since that’s where we have to live.

The revised unemployment numbers no longer report all the unemployed but the somehow seldom quoted U.S. Labor Force Participation Rate shows clearly that “full employment” is less full than once it was.  And while we hear about the all too visible homeless on our city streets, we hear comparatively little about the twice as many trying to survive by Living in their vehicles.  The American middle class is shrinking. It is simple enough, high cost producers are replaced by lower cost competitors until they find monopoly products or new ways to compete. They cut costs any way that they can, unlike governments. But admitting such realities won’t get you reelected these days, best fake it past the next election. Reality can wait … until it won’t wait anymore.

About Jack Curtis

Suspicious of government, doubtful of economics, fond of figure skating (but the off-ice part, not so much) Couple of degrees in government, a few medals in figure skating; just reading and suspicion for economics ...
