Roman Catholics are Christians; their numbers in the West are shrinking. So are those of Protestants. In the Moslem world, the numbers of committed believers also shrinks. Too many precepts of each faith are becoming ignored as people discover modern technology and its related improvement in human lives. That discovery is accelerating as the technology proceeds.
The results are very different. Christians falling away from their rigorous faith are today, content to leave their neighbors in peace; Moslems imstead. rise up in ‘holy’ rage to murder any who refuse to adopt whatever the thugs feel pleased to mete out. This is construed Allah’s Will. Why?
It is simple; Christianity rests upon individual responsibility for conformity to God’s Law; Islam rests upon individual submission to Allah’s Will as imposed by others. Dissident Christians may burn in Hell; dissident Moslems (or non-Moslems) must be sent there by the pure. The pure know who they are; their Imam or Ayatollah tells them. (Submission, remember?)
So Islam is coming apart (slowly) as folks vote with their feet for decent lives while Christianity is dissolving (faster) as science provides more comfortable lives than those early Church beliefs provided. Our species prefers the easy way, right?
The enormous joker in this deck of marked cards is that the wealthy West that has motivated the collapse of primitive and miserable Islamic folks’ belief in the Prophets’ road to happiness is going down the drain as fast as the Islamic places; it just has further to fall. Somewhere, a mighty Creator is laughing …
Eyeballing our history, just as Romes’s abandonment let to the (originally) Christian, modern West, we expect the current abandonment of Christianity and at greater length, Islam, to lead to some form of more advanced, hopefully (no bets) more functional culture. Eventually, after sufficient numbers have died and economies have stultified and exhaustion has set in. Not soon.. And our only available tool to assemble this progress out of current dissolution, is our garden-variety, (i.e, corrupt) politicians.
But if one considers it, that has always been the case, and look where we are today compared to say, 1919 when some 12% of American homes had bathrooms if our reading is correct. Or go whole hog and compare us to the way the lifestyles of the Neanderthals. We may not amount to much as individuals, but our species has come a long way and it’s a reasonable bet that it will continue into the future. That seems to be one thing that it is designed to do. And to us, that seems a miracle.
