The President, Congress, MSNBC To Fox News: Is Anybody Listening Any More?

IgnoringWe are no particular fans of our President but neither do we wish to ape his shtick, telling folk that they can keep their doctors knowing that is not so. Thus, if we are unimpressed with the Prez, no more do we defer to his media detractors. Most of the major TV media are by observation, Lefty propagandists, generally. A flaming exception is Fox News.

Fox dutifully brings on Lefties to season its generally conservative-baked goods. But too often, those Lefties are pro-forma types that would seem more impressive if replaced with parrots, the which they often resemble. That is understandable in an avowed anti-Left operation (with little competition, thus high ratings and probably, high profits). We do not obviously, consider all the weary sameness of the Left-loving TV spectrum competitors for Fox; they and it serve different markets. (If ‘serve’ is a fair choice.)

What wearies us is the unremitting sameness and stupidity presented by both Fox and its opposition. By and large, they operate with the standard 15 second sound bites of legend, entirely untroubled, it seems to us, by any thought whatsoever. The several Lefty outlets could justify this if they designated say, one of their outlets to provide some intellectual sustenance; they do not, any more than does Fox. Fear of low ratings, perhaps? We know their opinion of American I.Q.’s.

Fox tonight was fulminating over the President’s lac of leadership, an increasingly popular subject. That strikes us as a fair attack; the President seems to us to endlessly campaign but his does not seem the conduct of a leader. His own behavior too often fails to resemble his preaching. Taking highly visible, obviously costly vacations in the face of various crises and in financially troubled times for many citizens is only one simple, “Let ’em eat cake!” example. The Prez seems either tone-deaf on symbolic leadership, or uncaring.

We have all figured that out by now; we don’t need ongoing complaints from newscasters night after night. We need reality, whys and wherefores. Instead, tonight we heard from Fox over and over, re Ukraine, re Islamic terrorism and various other subjects the same refrain: The Prez must lead! He must do something! He must stop ignoring the (insert choice) problem! He is the Leader Of The Free World, doing nothing! About one more serving of his will have us rejecting our supper. Fortunately, we seldom are exposed to TV. In fairness, someone did specify that the Prez should add “Islamic” when he said “terror.” That was specific.

We would not mind complaints of Presidential inaction if suggested actions accompanied, but that does not seem to occur much. It’s “he should do … something.” Whatever that “something” should be, is too often left undefined. That sort of thing is a reprehensible playground of politicians, unforgivable it seems to us, in a ‘news’ outlet. The next layer of this sickening cake is, once some action is actually specified, (rarely) it is virtually never evaluated for cost  nor risk. Often, not even for feasibility in a real world. Again, the model preferred by politicians and of course, high-pressure salesfolk.

Tentatively, we conclude that what was once the “Fifth Estate” has degenerated to nothing more than commercial hucksterism, selling us whatever they think might produce for them, the most return. And only fools should allow themselves to expect more.

That there are individuals who try to do better we have no doubt. But they are drowned out by the mass volume of the big boys and the numbers of their opposition. We read that now, the ‘news’ is increasingly the interest of the elderly; younger folk pay little attention. The old watch out of habit; they young can’t be bothered. We can see why.

  1. I used to watch the news a great deal, but now I don’t even bother. People often accuse me of being a Fox news junkie, but it’s not true. Congress and the President sure aren’t listening to us either. On the bright side we’ve still got the NSA. They seem to be listening to us 😉

AMEN! I think we have become numbed by the rhetoric. Why doesn’t come up with some useful solutions to the problems of our country rather than just complaining about them?

Seems to me, when we tossed Christianity for moral relativism, we
headed back to the world average corruption. And that seems to be
entwined with the world average economic poverty …
