Here is a little portrait of present America, assembled from current news:
Third graders in public elementary school were found smoking pot in the school restroom.
A school bus driver was fired for allowing pot smoking on his bus.
A pregnant mom drove her two kids and baby into the ocean.
The President broke his promise to help Congress with the IRS investigation.
A man was accused of having sex with a pit bull.
A woman lost a tooth at a fight at a Walmart self-checkout machine.
A 23 year old woman was arrested for beating her 53 year old mom on the head with her vibrator.
And a man was arrested after punching a diner who had refused his request for a bite of his burrito.
Note that none of these things bear on great matters in Ukraine or Iran; they do not impinge upon the burgeoning debt or the Presidents’ new budget with its Obamacare bail-out and phantom deficit reductions. These are just what have become common if still newsworthy events occurring in everyday society among ordinary citizens. But these aren’t the news items of yesteryear.
These sorts of events characterize a changed American society. Folk from the ‘uptight’ 1950’s would be much more shocked than today’s readers encountering such events in the news. We paid a price for those older attitudes too; that was part of the motivation for the kids’ rebellion against them in the 1960’s. Nothing after all, is free … ever.
I will leave it to you to evaluate the comparison for yourselves. I do think that it deserves some consideration. I will add only that, if pit bulls receive such treatment, it’s only surprising that they don’t have a worse reputation than they enjoy now….
