The debt ceiling has been the recent, manufactured ‘news’ thrill intended to keep us hanging upon the media’s dole, lest we go fishing independently in the internet. That would deprive the news elite of their rarified salaries, leaving them to find actual work.
A moment’s thought, admittedly unlikely for many with better things to do, exposes the nonsense purveyed to us as news. We were supposed to wonder or worry about what the Congress would do with the upcoming spending avalanche as it crashes against the debt ceiling. Only a year or so ago, we saw a highly dramatic (or supposedly, anyway) ‘government shutdown’ during this phase of spending. That was, if investigated, fake. Nothing important suffered; it was the equivalent of the ancient ploy of local high schools at budget time: Threatening to cancel football.
The present debt ceiling ‘thriller’ is the same old game, no more than a cry for attention. Anyone more awake than Rip van Winkle before his 20 years ran out knows that a ‘bipartisan’ agreement passed a new spending deal recently, right? So, should anyone believe that the same folk who have just agreed upon spending, would suddenly disagree on obtaining the money to spend? Yeah!
The debt ceiling dance provides the Republicans an opportunity to posture against spending (that they have already agreed to) and it gives Democrats a shot at ‘protecting’ their clients against the GOP. Win-Win, right?
And it helps the media keep the viewers glued to the screen. Win, Win, Win! And that set up a spate of stories about how the GOP ‘elite’ screwed over their Tea Party Neanderthals. This is the sort of ‘news’ that reminds us of a diet of Rice Krispies, once described as: “Empty calories” by a critic.
We, seems to us, look pretty stupid buying into this sort of flimflam from the news… And even less intelligent, accepting it from our politicians!
