Pity the Boy Scouts; by trying to engage American boys in healthy, moral and constructive pursuits, they have managed to enrage both Political Left and Political Right. No good deed, indeed, goes unpunished!
As all who arise in the morning must know, the Scouts enraged the Left with their refusal to provide homosexual adult leaders and allow ‘openly’ homosexual membership among the boys. The media, sympathetic to any Lefty anschluss, piled on for the headlines. (Name any Lefty push of the last five years they’ve opposed.) The Scout managers did a ‘deer in the headlights’ dance to placate both complainants, (Left and religious Right) and succeeded in infuriating all of them by approving ‘openly gay’ members, but not homosexual adult leaders. The Left, smelling blood, are refusing their half-a-loaf and the Right, scandalized, are in full rebellion or at least, sound like that.
The Scouts need smarter managers. Someone, a long time back, noted that no one can be all things to all people, especially when principles are involved as they are here. The scouts, instead of setting out in panic (They’ve been losing sponsors over this) to put out the fire some way, any way, should have analyzed their market; that has changed.
The Boy Scout Oath starts: “On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country.” That was an easy sale when the Scouts began; it doesn’t seem to reflect today’s society. Neither religion nor patriotism are much approved these days and both are frequently decried and attacked. That’s no longer the market for original Scouting.
The managers needed to either bite the bullet and reposition their enterprise or decide to damn the torpedoes and stick to their original principles whatever the cost. Instead, they tried to divide Solomon’s baby by going for gay boys but not gay adult leaders.
Formally accepting ‘openly gay’ boys is accepting a gift bomb with a burning fuse; lawyers everywhere must be salivating. Refusing gay adult leaders will disappoint the lawyers who’ve thrived on Roman Catholic priests but that won’t help with the coming new attacks on Scouting and its sponsors, from the Left. Management seems to have assured the worst of both possible worlds…
And that’s a shame, because your average Eagle Scout became a cliche for the best male human qualities and there’s no prospect for replacement of that model. It will be missed.
