You may have forgotten Major Nidal Hasan in the flow of news since November, 2009 when he murdered 13 people at Ft. Hood in Texas, screaming “Allahu akbar!” as he killed. He has lived quietly at taxpayer expense ever since. As he is now paralyzed from the waist down, that hasn’t been cheap for those taxpayers. At least his prisoners’ jump suits have kept his clothing bill small. What happened to the “speedy trial” guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution? Yeah… If he were a Moslem terrorist, we might understand the snail’s pace of justice, but the government has classified his act as: “workplace violence.” Islam, you see, has nothing to do with it. Got that? Right! This is akin to insisting that, in 1890, the KKK was a plantation gentlemen’s club with no connection to all those dead bodies hanging from trees but it remains the official if obtusely myopic, position of the U.S. government.
Which is why our current President Obama speaks of the Boston bombings without mentioning either “terrorism” or “Islamic.” This probably puts a strain on his teleprompter, but the poor thing does what it’s told, just like the U.S. Army at Fort Hood and the FBI in Boston.
To this writer, the present media carping at the FBI seems like shooting the traditional sitting duck. Easier, perhaps than going out and digging up the facts to gather their own stories to report while also providing the continued shelter of political correctness.
The FBI is not heroic nor is it supermen; it’s a bureaucratic police agency hamstrung like all government, by politics. It costs too much for what it does and follows the political winds. But given those realities, it has done a decent job excluding that which is not Islamic Terrorism from our shores, seems to me, and I’m no lover of any government agency.
See, there are some 310 million folks in this country, including maybe 10% or so ‘invisible’ illegal aliens. Nobody will ever be able to guarantee safety any more than anybody can provide guarantees against criminality. Nobody, not ever and that includes the FBI. Our politicians though, would still like to disarm us so we, whom they can’t protect, are guaranteed unable to protect ourselves.. (from those politicians, in their case).
Much is being made of the Warning from Russia re the Chechen brother. How many such are received by the FBI, concerning how many people? How many are downplayed to avoid complaints from Moslems or accusations of (horrors!) stereotyping? We can’t have this both ways; either you pay special attention to Moslems, or your screen lets some bad guys through if you don’t.
As populist commentator Bill O’Reilly said on Fox News, everybody knows that Islamist terrorism accounts for most of such actions worldwide these days; it’s no secret. except perhaps to some of our policy-makers in government and academia. But we have decided to play “Let’s Pretend” whatever the cost.
Islam began as a wave of blood, sword and fire with “convert or die” as its mantra. That is still built into the faith, though kept as it were, in the basement since Moslems lost the strength needed to push it again. But there has always been and likely will continue to be a sort of nut fringe or way-out minorirty that marries murderous violence against innocents with God’s Command. This is a minority from about a third of the earth’s population; we’re unlikely to run out of them any time soon. And transport and technology have together empowered them while their more peaceful coreligionists tacitly encourage them by funding or by just holding their silence. Far too few overtly oppose the Jihadists; some are afraid of attracting their attention (They kill such with enthusiasm) or realize that their common religion does in fact, provide justification for terrorism against non-Moslems.
Americans have been lucky since 9/11/2001 and now, the luck ran out in Boston. We have simply rejoined the world, in large parts of which Improvised Explosive Devices are commonplace. It’s not the fault of the FBI, nor even of our head-in-the-sand governors afraid of offending Moslems. It’s just history, doing what history does.
But we could live a little safer with our governor’s heads up, alert and honest…
