President Reagan (R) was called: “The Great Communicator.” He evidently took the microphone with him; the only effective communication today seems to come from his successor, President Obama (D). Today’s Republican leadership seems to be uh, ‘communication challenged’ in public The GOP is paying for that and the bill is climbing.
Example: The Prez suggested the Sequestration as a solution to the budget impasse. With the Sequestration about to burst from theory into real life or perhaps, undead life, the GOP gleefully recalled its authorship and sat back. The Prez on the other hand, leaped to his jet and scrambled from place to place warning of the awful results about to unfold from GOP intransigence. And completely forgetting that it was originally his idea. His listeners heard him trying to save them from the Republican destruction again and nothing else. Game, set and match to Obama. Image: Republicans sitting around with their thumbs…well, you know! That is what happens when you play defense against a propagandist. Famous courtroom example: “Answer yes or no: Are you still beating your wife?”
The Republican leaders have made their trap and deserve it. American citizens do not deserve its results however, which are mostly, to deny them a significant choice in what is about to happen to the economy. The Republicans in the House have been providing the money via regular appropriations bills…the money that the Republican leaders deplore as Democrat spending. The spending holds off the impending pain from trimming all the voters’ Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and all the politicians’ generous lobbyists war games around the world. The resulting debt is of course, ruinous. Later…
So the President is standing up for Social Security and Medicare (which is cut big next year to fund his Obamacare) while pointing to the Republicans who want to cut. A hero! And Republicans are villains. And when the crunch for whichj both want the other to be blamed hits, the Republicans will be where they were at the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt, last time they went up against a communicator.
See, to be a communicator, you need a message. President Obama stays on his message. The Republicans have no message; they’re stuck between returning to American founding principles, which they’re busy repudiating, and pleasing younger and ‘minority’ voters by moving left while carefully not admitting it. They have nowhere to stand. There’s an old Scriptural comment about such unprincipled, wishy-washiness, wherein something is neither fish nor fowl: “I will spit them out of my mouth…” . .
Republicans are deservedly losing but the biggest losers are Americans.
