The world, or at least the human-run part, adds up to a funny place. The official home of Communism, the U.S.S.R, struggled with the United States and western Europe over more than half a century to impose its views and failed, collapsing of its own economic contradictions. Its successor, a reduced Russian empire, became an increasingly authoritarian, crony-capitalist state. The surviving official propaganda organ of the Soviets, Pravda, recently opined somewhat bemusedly that Obama’s reelection comprised the inarguable reversal of the historical roles of the U.S. and the U.S.S.R, stating that Obama is a communist leader in a now communist country. The cold war contenders have switched places, as Pravda sees things.
Given that what we now call socialism has been on tap during all of recorded history, has failed in every one of its many attempts at Nirvana (and always for the same reason: human nature) you might expect a rational species to have at least begun to question the concepts but no, humanity follows its script as written: “Ours not to reason why, ours but to do, and die” should be engraved upon our racial grave marker if anyone survives to provide one.
That’s irony for you; those who won adopting the loser’s shtick while the loser has realistically, adopted at least a version of the winners outlook and methods. You’d think the winners felt guilty about their victory, right? Our Creator must be rolling in whatever He uses for aisles, holding His sides to keep His laughter from shaking His universe. We have to be the clowns of Creation; we have no other obvious explanation… all our civilizations end the same way, with an entirely predictable, self-inflicted pratfall.
Our mighty Presidents Bush and Obama have shaken their world, destabilizing the Middle East and Central Asia so that Islamic primitives can make their bloody bids for control of millions of lives, backing civilization up half a millennium while weakening Western economies with unsustainable debt to no defensible purpose. Homo ‘Sapiens’ is ridiculous on its face; we are Homo Ridiculoso if we are anything.
We construct universities and teach political science and economics at great expense and effort when what is needed is only to read Cervantes, who understood humanity and wrote of Quixote so that we could, too. But we are too much the Don ourselves to see, so we go on repeating our mistakes as did he, in the hope that the result will be different this time…and we all know what that means, don’t we? And we have the ultimate irony of Pravda as our Sancho Panza, pointing it out to us now.
At least our human comedy gives the lie to the humorless Atheists; we are the comedians of the universe and we demand a God to be entertained…
