The Wages of Woodstock…

The America that built this country was run by WASPS–white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestants–who subscribed to something called the ‘Protestant Work Ethic’ and sat comfortably on top of power. Catholics were unwanted but in their own enclaves such as utilities; blacks, Chinese and Mexicans were automatically handed shovels. Oh, and married women didn’t have to work; they stayed home and raised kids. And those knuckle-dragging racists produced the greatest wealth machine ever seen on this planet, together with the greatest individual liberty. Must’ve been awful, right? No unions, no minimum wage…

Let’s define awful: Too many folks out of work, as in the Great Depression? Or right now with 25% unemployed in several E.U. countries and soon coming to a place near you? Too few who can afford a home, like all those evicted and those awaiting foreclosures with underwater mortgages? The American poor are far better off than 80% of the world. However, our government is doing its best to equalize things.

Prior to say, the 1970’s we assumed a carpenter would support a family and raise his kids decently while mom stayed home. The 1960’s seem to be the Great Divide: We threw out the arts, music, dance and with the help of The Pill, sexual restraint. Going out entrained with those were the family, religion, individual responsibility and the ineffable value of human life. Our once Judeo-Christian society fractured down the middle over convenience abortion and law has shifted from enforcing religious values all the way to attacking religion.

Unsurprisingly, violence has grown; the murder rate in American cities shrank steadily from the 19th century until the 1960’s and has been climbing since. Packs of teens roam the streets attacking random victims as a game; one of these recently killed an elderly man. None with sense walk past a group of young men on the sidewalk with ease, windows and doors are barred.

When we were a religious people, we restrained ourselves. Now, there is nothing left to restrain us but government, which is training and equipping itself for that task, which looks to become more difficult as the economy worsens, if Europe is any indicator.

We tossed all our uptight, restrained, disciplined, hard-working–and religious–values in the 1960’s to let it all hang out in a haze of pot smoke and free sex. We had our fun. Now, we’ve a 40% unmarried mom rate (some 65% for blacks) for young girls, no jobs for young people and Uncle Sugar who’s pledged to support everybody is dead broke. We threw away our uptight lives with songs and sex at Woodstock; kindly remind me now of what it is we’ve gained in return? I need to know, so that I can explain it to my grandchildren…

About Jack Curtis
