How Will We Handle Human Biology When We Can’t Handle Government Finances?

Wily E. Coyote Finally Looked Down

The retribution for sacrilege has always been awful; mere man isn’t intended to assume to himself the powers of an admittedly jealous God. Now, with increasing numbers of men denying God His existence, His mantle falls upon them, having no other place to land. And also as always, with no boundaries to human aspiration, man advances into hubris, assuming Godly power he has no capacity to control. Our species is one with Wily E. Coyote, run off the cliff after the disappearing Roadrunner, but not yet having looked down, unaware of the impending fall.

God, the Intelligent Designer or random chance–somebody–arranged that we birth a few more boys than girls. That was considerate since our men die more often than our women. And sooner, too. So having more boy babies than girl babies worked out well for the species. But time has passed and biologists have peered through microscopes and we have learned more about how it works, leading to: Boy Crazy. Seems that now, since we can order our kids’ sex from the obstetrician ahead of time, lots of folks are doing that. Well, lots of rich ones, anyway.

Since many places have made choosing a baby’s sex illegal, the result is a parade from those places to the laissez-faire (on this) U.S. where nobody cares. And where the service is a very good business for those doctors providing it. Many of their customers being Indian and Chinese, the demand for boys leaves the girls far behind.

Fast forward now from that scene to the next story: Falling U.S. Birth Rates simply points to the fact that Americans are having fewer children, a trend that is following the declining economy. This has happened before in hard times; kids are a cost. And with our advances in birth control and our readily available abortion, we needn’t have them unwanted and so, we don’t.

So we increasingly can have kids to order or have none; time was, those things were left to God or His assistant, Random Chance. Those folks’ services worked pretty well for our species; whether our own choices as substitutes will do as well seems a worthy question. What will a society with too many males and too few females (by current standards) look like, compared to what we’ve taken for granted? What happens to a society when it drops below the roughly 2.1 kids-per-couple rate needed to maintain itself? As time provides more advance knowledge of what sort of person a fetus is likely to become, (we can increasingly spot autism, Down Syndrome and other conditions these days) will we tighten standards on which babies are allowed to live to be born? Will we apply eugenics, tailoring our offspring? Will the government get involved? Where will that lead?

The old Greeks said that men’s assuming the powers reserved to the gods was hubris, and hubris was always followed by nemesis. Jews and Christians speak of sacrilege. An unbeliever may just relegate poor outcomes in this to bad biology. But what the Hell…it likely won’t matter what terms are used; what will matter is, how can a species that can’t manage its own finances handle a subject like this once that species takes control?

About Jack Curtis

Suspicious of government, doubtful of economics, fond of figure skating (but the off-ice part, not so much) Couple of degrees in government, a few medals in figure skating; just reading and suspicion for economics ...

Well, that’s like those 5,000 lawyers on the sea-bottom, a good start! Somehow, we need to snip the Congressional vas spenderens…

A little Congressional prostatitis exam is in order. PSA test is already in the affimative. Disorder and disease. Needs surgery. Had professor named V.D. Quick. He was good guy 45 years ago. Would not be one of those today.

In those days, the Democrats stood for the Gold Standard (“honest money”), individual liberty and defending the ‘little guy’ against the powerful. Time passes, things change…
