When a Little Knowledge Is a Truly Dangerous Thing…

Pandora’s Box?

Biological research is now predicting defective kids in utero and identifying sociopaths using brain imaging. Please tell me why abortions aren’t about to shoot up and probably come to include kids of the wrong sex? And please, PLEASE tell me the government won’t take an interest in kids found to have sociopathic brain structure…

Another kind of scary proceeds from: Disorders of Consciousness, which is research that can now tell whether a comatose patient is really brain dead or just incommunicado. Seems a lot of folks ruled ‘unresponsive’ by the medics and killed off –excuse me, allowed to die– are in fact mentally functional but paralyzed physically. And some number of them, depending upon what sort of problem is present, are able to recover. This is good news, right? Well…it’s incredibly costly to keep a physically helpless body going. An easy sale if you know she’s likely to recover. But when that’s unlikely? And the tests show full mental functioning? Able to hear and understand but not respond? It’s ObamaCare now; what’s the government going to do with your money in such cases?

It gets better; Brain Imaging Predicts Intelligence is the latest; two little sets of questions here:

1. How many ‘low’ intelligence babies are going to actually get born when the tech reaches that level? (And who’s going to decide what is ‘low’?)

2. When actual intelligence is measured by a machine, what will that do to society and law? Will people with enough intelligence to get born but less than a significant number of others have a decent future? Will employers hire them? Will the government leave this alone or impose structure? Will criminals be handled the same when intelligence is very different?

Noting that churchfolk are fading and the non-believers are beginning to attack the churches as they take over suggests that human life’s value will be seen very differently than it has under the old Judeo-Christian playbook. Lots of interesting things to look forward to, from what I can see. And at the rate science is proceeding, it won’t take long for them to arrive. I wonder if we’ll be ready…

About Jack Curtis

Suspicious of government, doubtful of economics, fond of figure skating (but the off-ice part, not so much) Couple of degrees in government, a few medals in figure skating; just reading and suspicion for economics ...
