GOP OK With Welfare So Long As It’s No Fun?

So, seems some food stamp/welfare clients spend their chunk of public funds on lap dances, beer and what have you. Not a news item nor a new item, either. The welfare-oriented Dems haven’t seemed to mind; the GOP sees that as an opening. House GOP Seeks to Ban Use of Welfare Funds at Strip Clubs is a result.

Considering the number of Congressmen seen at strip clubs over the years (one of the few truly bi-partisan activities) the heretofore lack of attention to the matter is understandable. But now it’s time for the Republicans to point to Democratic carelessness about how taxpayer dough is spent and to stand for morality themselves, an interesting position for politicians of either stripe…kind of like a skunk peddling Febreze.

Republicans have mostly frowned on welfare on the theory (well proven) that if you subsidize something, you get more of it. They usually support taking money from taxpayers only for the neediest and setting limits to prevent welfare careerists. Democrats have pushed for generosity and been unhappy with any but the most generous limits on the theory that it buys them lots of votes. (Republicans expect their votes from the taxpayers whose money is taken.) So you see that both sides are purely public-spirited.

So far as is known, no one has polled the dancers at the strip clubs to see what they think.

About Jack Curtis

Suspicious of government, doubtful of economics, fond of figure skating (but the off-ice part, not so much)
